Evening at the Papermill
Wednesday, March 3, 2010
The property dates back to 1795, when it was a functioning papermill. After the business began to suffer, the site was sold in 1934 to Antionette Scudder and transformed into a theater. The Papermill Playhouse opened its doors in 1938 with a showing of The Kingdom of God
.
Famous, award-winning performers have graced the stage of the Papermill, such as Patrick Swayze, José Ferrer, Celeste Holm, Gene Wilder, Betty White, Mickey Rooney, Kristin Chenoweth and Anne Hathaway.
Lost in Yonkers is a beautiful, funny, honest play that highlights a coming-of-age story. Written by Neil Simon, this play won a Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award. Set in Yonkers, New York, two young brothers – Jacob and Artie – are forced to live with their harsh grandmother and loopy aunt after their mother passes away and their dad becomes a traveling salesman. Drama unfolds as the brothers are forced to adapt to the lifestyle of a complicated family unit.
I was so impressed with the acting, especially of the young character of Artie. He delivered comedy, drama, irony and anger with such ease and authenticity. Bobby and I thoroughly enjoyed our experience at the Playhouse and will definitely be back again for a show!
