Write Nite

Every Wednesday I meet up with a group for "Write Nite." During Write Nite, we type or put pen to paper at one of these Manhattan locations for 2-3 hours. We drink mint tea and sometimes snack on avocado and hummus or fresh-baked pastries. We briefly chat about manuscripts, pacing, plot development, and all those crazy questions that writers wonder about (i.e. Last night I had some car questions. Have I forgotten how to operate a vehicle already?!). We encourage one another in our work, and minimize distracting conversation. This is not a time for workshopping material – it's only about the writing.

If you don't already regularly meet with a writing group, I invite you to virtually join our Wednesday Write Nite. Commit to your creative work from 5:30 to 8:00pm or so. Disconnect the Internet. Find an inspiring space. Use this time to channel your thoughts, develop your stories, revise your work, invent new narrative threads, discover your characters. And see what happens!

The beautiful weather we had a week or so ago has passed – last night was thunderhail, today there's snow. I took the above shots {near Union Square} while en route to Write Nite last night. And this, below, is from today's morning walk with the dogs.

Our weather has turned cold again too. Calling for snow on Monday! boo.

I need to set aside time to write too....not that I'm a writer, but I'd love to put more time into my blog.

How did you get involved with Write Nite? I really need something like this in DC.

Christina – I met the other ladies through an organization called SCBWI – Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrator's.... and then we just sort-of made up Write Nite. It's worked for us for almost an entire year now, and we've all really plugged along in our work. Some of us are now querying agents and/or editors. If you're looking to create a Write Nite group in DC, I'd just recommend connecting with other writerly friends and coordinating a weekly time/place that works with everyone's schedules.... And then see how it goes! I've been thankful for these regular check-ins with myself, my work & colleagues....
