Silks Class
Tuesday, April 26, 2011 This year is all about trying new things and getting out of my comfort zone. You might remember when I took my first trapeze class last week? Well, this past weekend I went back to Trapeze School New York for an aerial silks class...
Aerial silks are two long sections of soft fabric that hang loose from a single point. This circus apparatus requires flexibility and strength to climb the silks and twist into poses. Advanced students are able to do 'drops' and 'slides' down the fabrics, combined with more complex choreography.
When we first arrived to class, our instructor introduced us to the silks and explained proper body positions. We learned how to climb the apparatus safely (and without rope burn) and which muscles to use for basic movements. Then, at the ground level, we practiced the footlock, stand, the man in the moon, and a few inversions.
These poses were incredibly difficult for me. Although I'm a regular runner, the silks worked my back and abdominal muscles in extraordinary ways. So even though I felt like a total weakling, I left TSNY motivated to increase my strength, grace and flexibility. Yoga, pilates, dance and gymnastics students would probably find the aerial sillks to be a fun, challenging compliment to their current exercise regimen.
A friend of mine is the Director of La Petite Chouette, an aerial arts studio in the Santa Barbara area. Ninette is completely talented and inspiring! You can watch a video compliation of her aerial talents here and sign up for classes here.

My friend Nadia does aerial silks too, and it is amazing to see what she can do. I think she has the strongest abs and arms that I have ever seen! :)
girl, you are inspiring you know that? Your love for adventure and always wanting to try something new is just amazing. I noticed your travels for 2010 were completed. Do you have new countries on your list for this year? (did you know there is some sort of club for world travelers, something about been asked to join if you have visited 100 countries or more) I think you are very close no?
have a wonderful weekend.
