Just Published: Conservation Conversations

Last October the Chief Editor of Australia-based Bare Essentials Magazine invited me to write an inspirational article based on my career experiences. This open access magazine combines adventure lifestyle stories with wildlife conservation and environmental science topics. Contributors include researchers, photographers, journalists and explorers from all over the globe. So, here it is! The March/April issue, available to read for free online. I'd be honored if you checked out my piece + photographs in Conservation Conversations & all the great content in this magazine.

P.S. In my article, I reference a life-changing sixth grade project... I just posted two photos of it on my Facebook page!

Morning at Clearwater Marine Aquarium

jumping nicholas the dolphin

Did you see the movie Dolphin Tale? It's inspired by (and stars...) Winter the dolphin, the most famous resident of Clearwater Marine Aquarium. We spent the morning today at CMA, and here's a bit about our time there and all the animals we encountered...

Pura Stainless Bottle Review

Have you heard of Pura? All of Pura's bottles are made from 100% recyclable, food grade stainless steel. There's no plastic whatsoever. Pura sent me a wealth of information regarding independent research on plastics and the company's eco-progression mission, along with two bottles to review: a Pura Kiki infant bottle with a silicone sleeve, and a .6L adult (or older child) steel bottle. If you're in the market for non-plastic bottles (especially for an infant or toddler), read on for some more info on the Pura company and these two stainless steel products...

Hotel Review: Anse Chastanet

As mentioned in my post yesterday, we stayed at two different resorts during our St. Lucia vacation. After our time in Castries (the capital), we took a taxi down the island to the fishing village of Soufriere, a beautiful place with the dramatic backdrop of the Pitons. While in Soufriere, we stayed at the luxurious Anse Chastanet resort (perhaps you recognize their sister site, the mind-blowingly beautiful Jade Mountain?). Here's a bit about our experience...

St. Lucia's Rainforest

Ziplining in St. Lucia was off the agenda this time (obviously), but we took an aerial tram tour and enjoyed a forest floor hike to experience the sights, sounds, and smells of the rainforest....

Organic Cooking Class

You can't keep me away from the Brooklyn Brainery! I took my first cooking class (um, since home economics?) there last week. It had an organic 101 theme, so it was right up my alley. And what's not to love about a cooking class that tells you to bring tupperware? Here's what I learned and what we made...

Help Stop Plastic Waste this Earth Day

{katerha photo credit}

Over the last three years, we've made an effort to reduce our carbon footprint and use environmentally-friendly products. Some choices were easier than others. And we've successfully cut our carbon footprint by over 50% since 2008. But there's still work to be done.

This Earth Day, I've made a pledge to help stop plastic waste. I wrote up a post about the global one-time-use plastic waste problem on the Inside Nat Geo Channel Blog. I hope you take a moment and check it out. There's some eye-opening statistics and tips for how you can reduce your plastic waste this year.

Did you watch the show The 12,000 Bottle Boat last night on the National Geographic Channel? Fascinating stuff. Please check out a rerun this weekend.

Isla Mujeres

It's been a very busy weekend in Isla Mujeres, Mexico! I'm here with a team studying whale sharks and attending the annual Whale Shark Festival. There were some amazing keynote speakers yesterday, and I look forward to sharing all the details on cutting-edge whale shark research and conservation efforts in the near future. In the meantime, here are a few photos of the island....
