Birthday Celebrations
Monday, August 2, 2010
We spent Saturday night celebrating my friend Erika's 30th birthday. We've known each other for fifteen years, and I'm so thankful to have her as one of my best friends! She's such a beautiful person, inside and out!

And wow – does Erika know how to throw a party... There were gambling tables, artificial money with Erika's face printed on the bills, a dance floor & DJ, and even a custom made Louis Vuitton cake that matched her favorite monogrammed handbag!

Saturday, May 29, 2010
Have you ever seen the Hope Diamond? The famed deep blue stone – which is over 45 carats – was once owned by King Louis XV and Marie Antoinette. It was donated to the Smithsonian Natural History Museum from Harry Winston, Inc. in 1949. Legend has it that the Hope Diamond carries a curse with its beauty.
To honor the fiftieth celebration of the museum collection's crown jewel, the Hope Diamond was displayed bare of its diamond setting, pendant and necklace. I had a chance to see it on my last trip to Washington, D.C. and it is stunning!

P.S. A bit of trivia. Where was the Hope Diamond mined? Find out the answer here.

travel Snake Products
Tuesday, May 25, 2010
You might remember when I was in south Florida and spotted a bunch of American alligator products at a pharmacy. So recently I encountered the same situation, but with snakes. I was strolling past a gift boutique and spotted these products made from sea snakes, cobras and rattlers. There were wallets, life-size statuettes, shoes and even earrings...

Would you ever purchase an item made from snakes and their skin?

The State of Brooches
Monday, March 8, 2010 How sweet are these little wood brooches? Pin on your favorite U.S. state (or choose from select countries). Each one is handmade by the designer from vintage jigsaw puzzle pieces. These brooches would be such a fun, eclectic accessory on a reusable bag, grandpa sweater or thank you card (and a cute gift for the travel-lover in your life). I would adore a cheery Ohio pin to jazz up my work bag.
Behind the Broadway Curtain at Historic Barbara Matera, Ltd.
Saturday, January 23, 2010
On a recent flight home from Tampa, I had the pleasure of sitting next to Timothy Blacker, the purchasing manager for a couture New York City-based costume shop, Barbara Matera, Ltd.
Barbara Matera and her husband founded the shop in 1968. She was a legendary costume designer for over 100 Broadway shows, the New York City Ballet and the Met Opera, in addition to numerous film credits (such as The Great Gatsby and The Addams Family). Tim worked with her from the 1980s until her passing in 2001.
Welcome to the entryway of Barbara Matera, Ltd.....Through this doorway, dozens of employees are working diligently to finish select costumes for the upcoming Broadway national tour of Beauty and the Beast. On the walls, autographed theatrical production posters hang alongside photographs of Barbara Matera with legendary figures like the Duchess of York, Barbra Streisand, Angela Lansbury and Mikhail Baryshnikov.

Meet Timothy Blacker, purchasing manager and tour guide extraordinaire. Tim is truly a jack of all trades: a skilled designer, an articulate host, an intelligent businessman. He is knowledgeable on everything about Barbara Matera, Ltd and the innovation and execution of couture costumes. Below, Tim & I at the shop.
