Daydreaming of the Catskills

Later this month we're beginning a weekly summer-long exploration of the Catskills in Upstate New York. Have you been? I'd love to hear about your favorite activities, towns, and hiking trails! First up, we're planning to coast up along the Hudson River Valley and then cut west into Woodstock, Phoenicia, and then northeast to Hunter Mountain and the Round Top area. I'm been so #23 this week!

Flying with Baby: Ten Travel Tips

By my son's sixth month birthday, we'd taken eight flights with the little guy. I thought I'd share some things I learned about flying with a baby solo and with a partner. I also asked for travel advice from another frequent flying mom, Rebecca, who has flown seven times round-trip with seven-month old daughter – and almost all of the trips she was traveling on her own (and, now that I think about it, she's on a plane with her baby right this very moment!). Flying with a baby can be exhausting, but with some careful planning and packing, you can have a wonderful trip with your little one. We hope these tips help you plan your first (or next) trip as a new family!

Two Moms, Two Reviews: Samsonite EZ Cart 25" Spinner Suitcase

The Samsonite EZ Cart 25" Spinner Suitcase is a suitcase with a slew of impressive features on paper, such as a balanced 4-wheel system for push-pull maneuverability, shelf packing, a roomy interior and smart organizational features. First introduced in the 1990s as a revolutionary way to pack and navigate travel, Samsonite re-launched its EZ Cart in 2012. After testing this product solo for four months, I recruited another frequent flying mom – Rebecca – to try it out on some trips with her young daughter. Read on for our comprehensive, two-mom review, based on multiple flights and road trips across six U.S. states...

Outdoor Gear Test: Muck Boots

While it was a mild winter season this year in New York City, we did endure a fair share of meterological milestones, from Hurricane Sandy to Blizzard Nemo. We tested out four pairs of Muck Boots from the Original Muck Boot Company in the snow, sleet, rain and mud in four states during four months, and here's how they held up to the challenge...

Off to Virginia!

I have about 10 blog posts & reviews all queued up, but the past week has been swamped with work & life that I just haven't had time to edit them. I'll post new content ASAP, but this morning I'm off to northern Virginia with my son to visit family. Townes will be playing with two aunts, an uncle, two grandparents, and four cousins. Should be chaotic and fun. We're traveling solo by train, and admittedly I'm nervous about today... We've taken a bunch of trips over the past year, but I rarely travel with Townes alone, and he's SO ACTIVE now! He doesn't usually cry, but he wants to touch EVERYTHING! And crawl EVERYWHERE! Here's to hoping he doesn't climb under the seats and steal passenger shoes. I think I've timed it with his naptime but we'll see? Wish me luck. Have a wonderful weekend!

Some DC-Virginia posts you may have missed:

Elephant Bath.

Potomac River run.

Tortoise Time.

Monument Walk.

Planet(s) Earth.

Marine Corps War Memorial.

Hope diamond.

The Netherlands Carillion.

Cherry Blossom Festival.

And links to new published work.

On the Calendar: Italy

venice photo credit: wikimedia commons / nino barbieri

This spring marks our TEN YEAR wedding anniversary. A decade! What?! To celebrate, we're jetting off to Italy for a romantic vacation while our son spends time with my in-laws. So, I've been soliciting travel advice on every social media platform out there, and here's one for my blog – We'll be traveling this fall and right now I have the Amalfi Coast, Venice, Rome, Florence & Tuscany on the itinerary. We want a balance of experiencing the big, touristy attractions with some downtime along the coast and on a vineyard. Have you been to Italy? I'd love to hear your favorite places to stay, things to do, and any wisdom you'd like to share. Feel free to comment below or drop me a line! xo

Dog Sledding in the Poconos

The last time I was in the Pocono Mountains, I was on a mission for work to learn about dog sledding and the Siberian Husky breed. Since that visit two years ago, Skytop changed dog sled operators (I previously toured with Snow Caps) to Kim Darst of Husky Haven Kennels. On Sunday morning four of us went dog sledding with Kim and learned about Alaskan huskies and Alaska's 1,000+ mile Iditarod dog sledding race...

Sunday Skiing

My husband and I have been together for almost twelve years, and we've *never* gone skiing together... until today! I think the last time I was on the slopes was during my freshman year of college, and that was for snowboarding. So this morning we took the shuttle from Skytop Lodge to the Adventure Center for a few quick runs before lunch...

Sledding!

There are five of us vacationing here at Skytop Lodge in the Poconos, and we went sledding this afternoon! The big sledding slope is just a three-minute shuttle ride from the main lodge. Sleds/helmets are provided, so Skytop makes it really easy to just show up and sled for as long (or as little) as you want. We had a blast, especially with all the new powdery snow! It's been ages since I'd gone sledding. Want to see a few pics?

Trail Time

Before the much-talked-about snowstorm swept in this afternoon, we ventured out for a little Sky Top property exploring. We needed a short hike that would satisfy our craving for fresh mountain air, snow crunching beneath our boots, and the peace & quiet we just don't get in our daily urban lives. So we bundled up and wandered along the main road to a little spot (recommended to us by the concierge) where there's a waterfall...

Just Tested: The Boppy Travel Pillow

I received the original Boppy pillow at my baby shower last year, and during my son's first few months of life, I used this product every single day for snuggling and breastfeeding. When Townes was ready for tummy time and sitting up, the Boppy pillow was a fantastic ergonomic support system during those milestone stages. The company recently launched a new product – the Boppy travel pillow – intended to take the best of the original design, but make it suitable for life on-the-road. We tested it on a recent trip, and here's how it held up to the hype...

Hawks Cay Resort Review

This recent road trip was my first time visiting the Florida Keys, and October – despite the threat of hurricanes – was a perfect time to be there. Our resort was lively but not overly packed with people, the weather was pleasantly warm but not too hot (it hovered around the low 80's), and it was easy to score a table & parking space at area hot spots (like Bahia Honda State Park.) Contemplating a trip to the Keys? My review on Hawks Cay Resort after a three-night stay last week...

Key West Sunset Celebration

Have you ever been to Key West? It was our first time visiting this southernmost spot in the Keys. Every night, there's a sunset celebration at Mallory Square. Last night we went a little early to snag a prime table at a dockside restaurant, and crossed our fingers for the green flash at sundown (no such luck.) Want a see a few shots of the stunning Key West sunset?

Fresh Catch at Keys Fisheries

A local told me about Keys Fisheries restaurant, market & marina, and we liked it so much we went three times in three days. Seriously! The seafood is that good. Headed to the heart of the Keys? You've got to swing by this Marathon fresh catch favorite...

Saltwater Lagoon

We found our favorite spot for relaxation at Hawks Cay Resort – the saltwater lagoon. Isn't it perfection? We spent two hours today lounging under a cabana and swimming in the water. Added bonus to this little beach – resort food & beverage service right at your lounge chair.

Tarpon Feeding

I'm not an angler of any kind, but before we embarked on this Florida Keys roadtrip, I knew that tarpon are a prized sportfish because they're strong and will "bite and fight." But what I didn't know about was tarpon feeding. Have you heard about it – or tried it? Tarpon are massive, toothless fish – they can grow to eight feet in length and top 200 pounds – and they'll actually leap out of the water to slurp a snack off your fingers.
